You are basically admitting that you have no skill in combat and have to sit in the back lines praying you don’t engage anyone directly. Speaking of bows, let’s talk about archers and how much of a baby you are if you play ranged in a melee game.

For instance, a heavy knight can’t start with a bow or a two-handed spear, but does have access to the shield. The only downside to the class system is that they have a specific selection of weapons. You can also pick up enemy weapons after they die, allowing you to try new ones without changing classes. While you are encouraged to stay as one class to unlock their top weapons, switching it up will be necessary at times, depending on the map. As you gain levels, you unlock new classes and new weapons for your classes.

You start off with basic longswords, shields, pikes, and bows. There are a few different types of weapons to choose from as well. Expect to be backstabbed, teamkilled, and set on fire from behind. Game modes have between 40-64 players, making it the very definition of chaotic combat. It can work great in a one-on-one fight, but you are rarely in a one-on-one. Outside of weapon swings, you can jab and kick to interrupt players and open up their defenses. You can combo into different attacks or just spam swipe, which most people do. You have three basic types of attacks: a stab, an overhead swing, and swipe attacks. If you can’t handle quick, sometimes frustrating deaths, this game will not be for you.Ĭhivalry 2 mainly focuses on melee combat with an emphasis on counters and timing. The developers tried to capture just how deadly a medieval knight battle would be, and they nailed it for the most part. It is chaotic, messy, and can be really fun when you aren’t getting blasted by archers. There is some story and lore, but it boils down to red versus blue in knightly combat. Here they explain a bit about the two factions: Agatha and the Mason Order.

Lag wasn’t an issue, and I only spotted a hiccup on a few occasions.Chivalry 2 starts by recommending the tutorial, which you 100% want to do. This keeps you in the game rather than waiting in a lobby. It’s super easy to find a match, and if there aren’t enough players, bots will fill the missing ranks. The feature is non-existent, and if realism and immersion are the goals, this would be implemented in a future update.Ĭhivalry 2 is played mostly online, which worked out well during my time playing. All the melee classes don’t use it, and the archers slightly add tension to the bow string. With how immersive Chivalry 2 aims to be, it’s a real shame they don’t use the haptic feedback more in the PS5 version. There are options to be a female, but you’ll be stuck with only one voice option while the male characters have many. Players can customize the character’s appearance as each level introduces more items to purchase at the customization shop. It’s pretty disheartening when you get killed and find it was by your ally’s hand. Whenever I play an archer, I seem to find an ally’s head much easier than any enemy’s. This is especially easy to do since the battlefield is a hectic place to be. If you aren’t careful, you can find yourself killing your teammates more than the enemy. Although another layer of this immersion applies to team damage being in effect. Discovering your niche in the combat field is almost half the fun. This way of progression adds a unique layer of immersion to the game. Further, an officer is good at healing and upgrades to a guardian that increases these healing capabilities. This deals more damage and hits enemies with armor easier, but it also has its drawbacks. The Longbowman loadout is the initial Archer class that will eventually unlock a Crossbowman. Using The Lord of the Rings as an example, we will all start as a generic orc facing off against Aragon, but that can change over time.

I didn’t find it necessarily unbalanced no matter which level class I was facing off against because the tougher battle comes down to the skill level of the enemy you meet on the battlefield. There’s enough differentiation to each class to fit many playstyles, and each class can level up to unlock more weapons and proficiency with that character type. Archers can snipe foes from a far with arrows, but once in close range, they go down quickly. Vanguard heads each push while the knight helps hold the ground. Footman is your typical soldier who will take part in skirmishes. Knights are good at rallying teammates together and healing them. There are four different classes to choose from, Knights, Footman, Vanguard, and Archer.
